Dean,
I just wanted to thank you for writing such a GREAT book covering field audio. I have honestly been looking for something like this forever!
I picked up a copy at Location Audio Corp in LA and I will definitely always keep it with me on location as a life saving audio reference manual! If you ever release any other books on audio please email me and let me know. Great job man!
best,
Ian Levasseur
Director/DP

Hi Dean,
I am located in Illinois and purchased your book thru Trew Audio ( great folks ). I have moved over to audio side from video mainly because I was trying to improve the quality of sound in my videos. Audio to me is much more trying and a lot of effort must go into it to get it right. Always learning something new.
Anyway your book is a great help , especially the part of hiding mics on people
Thanks again
Tom

Hi Dean!
My name is Joe Foglia. I am a production sound mixer located in Orlando, FL. I work mostly in television out in LA. I have to say that your book is great! I have read quite a few books over the years and your seems to cut to the chase.
The reason for my email is that from time to time I get asked to go somewhere and give a lecture. I want to ask you for your permission to teach from your book. I would also like to sell the book to the students and so they can take notes in the book.
Thanks for your time.
Joe Foglia, CAS

Subject: Location audio Simplified "Success story"
Hello Dean,
My name is Benjamin and I was a student of Nicholas Morin at CDIS in Kelowna. One year ago I graduated from the masters program and moved to Vancouver to start a career in location audio. The problem was I had no idea what that even entailed ( I was educated as a studio engineer and did not even know what "Sound Speed" meant). I had previously had no interest in film until inspired by a course taught by Rob McDonaugh, a Vancouver Boom Opp.
Nick recommended your book, now one year later I have just finished booming season one of "Flash Gordan," own my own boom and mixer as well as a pro-tools mixing console and mac pro.
I even have a feature beginning Wednesday with a great crew.
My girl and I had a baby boy almost the same day I graduated and only a few weeks before we moved to Van, a city both of us knew nothing about. Your book was a life saver; and helped us survive. Now I have a great life here and the begining of a tremendous career.
THANK YOU!!!!
I would love to talk in person someday,
Cheers,
A very happy
Benjamin McDonald
- Benjamin, Dean Miles here, Thanks for the ego boost but you are the one who made it happen.
- I wrote the book to help operators get started because I had a tough go of it. I'm glad to hear your career is taking off and happy I could help. Congratulations on the the new baby and I would be happy to get together for a coffee. I don't live in Vancouver but I teach at The Arts Institute in Burnaby on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so I'm in town then.
- Give me a call and lets see if we can hook up.

Dean,
I'd like to thank you for writing location audio simplified, It's a great book!
I've been in the live sound industry for about 8 years now and I just recently got a call from MTV to record a reality show in my country, unfortunately I had to turn down the gig since I could not provide what they needed with such short notice. But since then, I've been doing lots research in the field and your book provided me with a great wealth of information.
I'd like to ask if you could recommend an education program that focuses on audio for film and video, especially location recording / production sound. Ideally it would be some sort of program or certification that could "add some weight to my resume". I'd like to have a certification that could offer credibility into my skills, since I'm going to be branching off into an area which I have no professional experience in. I feel that no matter how well read and educated I am in the subject, clients won't give me the chance to be responsible for audio on their project unless I have some experience, and I won't be able to get the experience until I am given the chance to work in the field. Having some formal education in the field would certainly be an asset to achieving this.
Again, thank you very much!

Hi Dean-
First, let me say how much I love the book! I might have to get another copy so as not to wear mine out.
I have a question regarding doing, what's now called in the biz, a wireless hop to the camera. You know, left and right out of the mixer into transmitters transmitting to two receivers on the camera, which in turn go into ch. 1 & 2. I've done this already with a couple of different wireless brands (Lectros, and Sennheiser ew-100's). My questions are: should everything be done at line-level, and should I be using tone on the mixer to do the calibrating (attempting to get everything at 0db)? It's amazing how everyone seems to be doing this now, but nowhere is there any real instruction in what the best (and correct) way is, to do it.
Thanks in advance, and thanks for the book!
Regards,
Dave Jones - PRODUCTION SOUND MIXER

Hello,
Just learned about your book from Jim Feeley’s article in this month’s Studio Monthly magazine (http://www.studiodaily.com/studiomonthly/currentissue/8859.html). I read some of your sample chapters (good stuff to know) and certainly will be purchasing your book; in fact, I’ve already started recommending it to my peers.
I had a quick question to ask though, and that’s regarding your take on the Audio-Technica’s AT4053a? In the same article, Jim recommends this mic for studio setups, but I’m not too convinced on the brand. I’ve been using a Sennheiser ME66 for a few years now (w/ a softie), and I’m happy with it but I just wish it was more directional, so as to minimize ambient noise as much as possible, when shooting on location (both outdoors & indoors). Any recommendations, other than buying the book (which is already is process)? Thanks!
